Health Promotion and Tobacco Cessation Program

Abstract
Health Promotion for U.S Troops in Korea is delivered through the Community Health Nursing/Health Promotion (CHN/HP) section. Preventive Services Directorate, 18th MEDCOM, and Installation Health Promotion Councils. Health Promotion
activities include awareness campaign, risk factor screening, injury/disease prevention and health promotion education, and behavioral health counseling. The Health Promotion Coordinators strive to assist unit commanders sustain a healty and fit
force,
mission ready in body, mind, and spirit, and enhance quality of life for soldiers, civilians, retirees, and their family members. Areas of health promotion that are readiness factors in Korea include tobacco use, alcohol abuse, stress,
overweight,
HIV/STDs, unintended pregnancies, hot/cold weather injuries, and dietary concerns. The Health Promotion Coordinators are American Lung Association vertified "Freenom From Smoking" faciliattors, and offer the tobacco use cessation classes in
different
Areas. Through the classes the participants bulid motivation to quit smoking, learn how to deal with craving for cigarettes, aviod weight gain, and cope with potential relapse situations. When they partivipate in the behavior modification
program,
they
are offered the option of Nicotine Pathch or Zyban.
